Over 42 shops and stores at our contract - The Mercury Shopping Centre in Romford, have had their time to shine in this year’s Retailer Awards. All winners and nominees were chosen by a public online vote.
An award ceremony was held on Monday 5th August. VIP guests including the Mayor of Havering Michael Deon Burton who gave out the ‘Community Recognition Award’ to The Entertainer who continually fund small local charities in the area as well as ensuring they hold ‘autism’ hours to connect with customers with sensory needs. The evening was filled with excitement and anticipation and was a really great opportunity for everyone to come and celebrate their successes together. Themed around The Garden of Eden, the night unfolded with a three-course meal, jazz musicians, a snake experience and a live fire performance!
The Mercury Shopping Centre, who run this awards event year on year think it is important that both centre staff and retailers alike find time to celebrate their successes together. Natalie Bays, deputy centre manager says, “It is warming to see our centre community being proud of their achievements this year, congratulations and a big well done to everyone who was nominated and came home with an award.”
From big high-street names to smaller individual businesses, everyone had an equal chance to win with a customer centric voting system.
This year there were 9 awards, with a surprise award for ‘Ingenuity’ of one forward thinking store team. This was won by Wilko who cleverly thought outside of the box when their main till ‘went down’ at Halloween – giving a job roll to a spooky Skeleton which was loved by members of the public and went viral.
The ‘Shining Star’ of the centre was this year won by Rudie, Premiere Cinema’s very modest projectionist for his dedication to the Romford Film Festival every year where he spends countless voluntary hours in ensuring hundreds of independent films can be shown in the correct order and sequencing that they need to be for their viewers. This award was sponsored by Axis Security and Axis Cleaning Services.
Other winners on the night included Peacocks for their friendly Customer Experience in Store, Mecca for their Eco- friendly battle against single use plastics and immense recycling procedures and Storky and McDonalds who took home the Small and Large Retailer of the year awards sponsored by Bellrock & Romford Recorder. Food retailer Caffe Della Terra were delighted to receive an award for Visual Merchandising.
Spencer Hawken, Centre Manager says that “The ability to award people for what they have done for the centre is truly inspirational, and all of the winners on the evening are so deserving of accolade.”
Each award was sponsored by companies that work closely alongside the centre, including Bellrock, who provide all of the centres planned engineering services, Mall Solutions who work with our incubated retailers in the malls and Messages PR who provide marketing support and events at the centre. Natalie Bays, Deputy Centre Manager says “We are incredibly grateful for all of the continued support from our sponsors; the best part about the sponsorship programme for us is celebrating the evening together with them. And we did just that.”
